Se mitä suomeksi yleensä kutsutaa pukuhistoriaksi ilmaistaan varsinkin englanniksi ja ranskaksi termillä muodin historia. Ns. länsimaisessa historiassa pukeutumista ja muotia ei voi erottaa täysin erottaa toisistaan, vaikka ne käsitteelisesti ovatkin eri asioita. Tässä luettelossa on siis muodin ja pukeutumisen historiaan liittyvää kirjallisuutta, joka ei pyrikkään kattamaan esimerkiksi ns. alkuperäiskulttuurien tai vaikkapa Aasian kulttuurien pukeutumisen historiaa. En ole luettoloinut myöskään suomalaista kansanomaista pukeutumista tai muuta etnistä pukeutumista. Näihin aiheisiin liittyviä kirjoja saattaa olla satunnaisesti toisessa luettelossa, jossa on pukeutumista käsittelevää kirjallisuutta laajemmin.
Costume history may also be referred to as the history of fashion or history of dress. The concepts of dress, fashion and costume overlap each other. Some scholars prefer to see them as equal, some want to highlight their distincion.

Erittäin antoisia ovat museoiden erikoisnäyttelyiden yhteydessä julkaistut teokset, joissa on hienojen kuvien lisäksi tutkijoiden kirjoittamia artikkeleita. Erityisen kunnianhimoisia julkaisuja tehdään Palais Gallieran näyttelyistä Pariisissa, Costume Instituten (Metropolitan Museum of Art) näyttelyistä New Yorkissa ja Victoria & Albert Museumin näyttelyistä Lontoossa.
In addition to the general literature, there is an endless number of publications which focus on a special theme, such as one decade of the 20th century, designers, fashion details, accessories, underwear, hair, jewellery, make-up, shoes, men’s wear, children’s dress, haute couture, alta moda, gender, body, feti, bridal dress, sports wear, working and occupational dress.
Some museums publish excellent books about their special exhibitions with both illustrations and texts written by fashion scholars. The most ambitious publications may be found at the Palais Galliera in Paris, The Costume Institute (The Metropolitan Museum of Art) in New York and Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
